UAE funds hotels and food as airspace closures prompt overstay fine waivers

As escalating tensions linked to the US–Israel–Iran conflict disrupted aviation across parts of the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) moved quickly to assist stranded travellers and minimise the impact of widespread flight cancellations and airspace closures. Through coordinated efforts by aviation authorities, immigration services, and tourism bodies, the country introduced a series of humanitarian and logistical measures — including free accommodation, food assistance, and waivers of overstay fines — demonstrating its crisis-management capabilities and commitment to passenger welfare.

Waiver of Overstay Fines for Affected Travellers

One of the most significant relief measures came from the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP), which announced that travellers unable to leave the UAE due to regional airspace closures would not face overstay penalties.

According to the authority, the exemption applies to individuals whose departure was delayed by “exceptional circumstances currently affecting the region,” which resulted in the temporary suspension of several flights. This decision ensures that travellers who remained in the country beyond their visa validity due to unavoidable disruptions will not be penalised. The policy reflects the UAE’s broader approach during emergencies — prioritising humanitarian considerations while maintaining efficient immigration procedures.

Free Accommodation and Essential Support

Beyond visa relief measures, UAE authorities had last Saturday also moved to provide direct support to stranded passengers.

The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) announced that it would cover accommodation and essential sustenance costs for passengers affected by flight cancellations and operational adjustments. The measure ensured that travellers stuck in transit or unable to continue their journeys could access safe lodging and basic necessities.

At the same time, Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi) instructed hotels across the capital to extend the stay of guests who were unable to travel due to the disruption. Hotels were encouraged to support affected travellers while authorities coordinated further arrangements.

Many travellers publicly praised the response, noting that officials and hospitality staff worked together to ensure their safety and comfort during an uncertain situation. Reports highlighted that travellers from various countries expressed appreciation for the swift action, with several describing the assistance as reassuring during a period of regional instability.

Coordination With Airlines and Airports

The ICP also collaborated closely with UAE-based airlines to help passengers navigate disruptions. Authorities facilitated flight rescheduling, provided timely travel updates, and coordinated support for passengers whose flights were diverted or delayed.

To ensure smooth operations at airports despite the sudden surge in travellers requiring assistance, specialised field teams were deployed. These teams were tasked with:
