M+, the renowned museum of contemporary visual culture in Hong Kong, is set to host the third edition of the Asian Avant-Garde Film Festival (AAGFF) from 29 to 31 May 2026. Supported by CHANEL, the festival will take place at the M+ Moving Image Centre, featuring a diverse programme of screenings, performances, talks, workshops, and VR experiences.
This year's theme, "Space Enter Shift," delves into the concept of space, examining its physical, psychological, and machine-generated dimensions. The festival will showcase works by pioneering artists such as Roger Garcia, Lamya Gargash, and Xu Bing, alongside sound artists like David Boring and Vivian Wang. The event aims to forge connections between artistic practices and explore new senses of community in a globalised, digital world.
Highlights include Roger Garcia's "Hong Kong Modern," which reflects on the city's independent film legacy, and Lamya Gargash and Vivian Wang's "Tracking Nomadism," a collaboration blending architecture photography with live music. The festival will also feature the Asian premiere of Larissa Sansour's "A Sunken Tale of Losses Delayed."
Suhanya Raffel, Museum Director of M+, expressed excitement about the festival's role in fostering dialogue and supporting experimental moving image practices across Asia. Silke Schmickl, CHANEL Senior Curator, highlighted the festival's exploration of space as a medium, reflecting the experimental nature of contemporary moving image practices.
The festival offers various ticket options, including a Festival Pass for $96 (HKD 750) and a Day Pass for $32 (HKD 250), with discounts available for M+ Members and Patrons
