ITA Airways reduces emissions with AI technology

ITA Airways, Italy's national carrier, is set to significantly reduce its fuel consumption and emissions by 2026 through the implementation of SITA OptiFlight®, an AI-powered tool. The airline aims to save over 7,100 tonnes of fuel and more than 22,100 tonnes of CO₂ across 2025 and 2026 by optimising climb profiles using real-time weather data and predictive analytics.

SITA OptiFlight® is being deployed across ITA Airways' fleet to calculate the most efficient climb profile for each flight. This involves adjusting airspeed, acceleration, altitude transitions, and climb Mach, ensuring precise performance under varying conditions. The initiative underscores ITA Airways' commitment to sustainability and operational excellence.

Francesco Presicce, Chief Innovation and Strategic Projects/Vision of ITA Airways, highlighted the importance of innovative technologies in achieving the airline's sustainability goals. "Data-driven insights and artificial intelligence allow us to achieve significant fuel-saving and emissions reductions without compromising efficiency or safety," he stated.

Yann Cabaret, CEO of SITA for Aircraft, emphasised the urgency for the aviation industry to reduce emissions whilst maintaining efficiency. He noted that ITA Airways' adoption of SITA OptiFlight® demonstrates the impact of data-driven solutions in addressing environmental and regulatory pressures.

The deployment of this technology positions ITA Airways as a leader in sustainable aviation, aligning with its broader commitment to responsible and innovative air travel. As the airline continues to integrate advanced technologies, it sets a benchmark for sustainability in the aviation sector
