Holidaymakers face steep visa overcharges

New research by Confused.com highlights the significant overcharging by third-party websites for tourist visas, with some fees reaching up to 462% more than official sources. The study, which surveyed 2,000 UK adults, found that half of holidaymakers are unsure which countries require a tourist visa, leading to confusion and anxiety during the application process.

The research indicates that third-party websites often add substantial fees for processing and consultation, with Zimbabwe being one of the most affected, where charges can be 462% higher than official rates. For instance, whilst British citizens can obtain a free electronic travel visa for Australia, third-party sites charge an average of £56.79.

The survey also revealed that 67% of those who have applied for a tourist visa experienced stress and anxiety, with 18% deterred from visiting certain countries due to the complicated and costly process. Common requirements such as a bank statement, proof of accommodation, and a travel itinerary often catch travellers off guard, with 74% unaware of the need for financial proof.

Tom Vaughan from Confused.com advises, “Entry requirements and visa-free periods vary by destination, so it’s sensible to factor this into your holiday planning.” To assist travellers, Confused.com has launched a visa checker tool that directs users to official visa websites, helping to avoid unnecessary costs and ensuring all documentation is in order.

This research underscores the importance of being informed about visa requirements and the potential pitfalls of using third-party services. As travel resumes, holidaymakers are encouraged to utilise official resources to streamline their travel preparations
