AmaWaterways unveils AmaSofia on the Rhine

AmaWaterways has celebrated the christening of its newest river ship, AmaSofia, during a ceremony at the ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam.

The event, held on 14 March, marked the debut of AmaSofia, the first AmaWaterways vessel to showcase the company's refreshed branding and colours in Europe. The ship can accommodate up to 154 guests across 76 staterooms, with suites up to 350 square feet.

The christening ceremony was attended by over 1,200 travel advisers, who were invited to participate in the festivities hosted on three of the cruise line’s ships: AmaPrima, AmaVenita, and AmaSofia. Sarah Little, Senior Vice President of Business Development at ASTA, served as the ship's godmother, officially christening AmaSofia. The evening concluded with a 300-drone light show over the Rhine.

Catherine Powell, CEO of AmaWaterways, expressed the significance of the event, stating, “Ships come to life through people, from the crew who pour pride into every detail, the guests who celebrate life’s moments on board to the travel advisers who inspire those journeys in the first place.”

AmaSofia will begin its 2026 season with Rhine itineraries, including the Rhine Castles & Swiss Alps route, before repositioning to the Danube in June. The ship will offer itineraries such as Romantic Danube and Christmas Markets on the Danube, primarily sailing between Budapest and Vilshofen.

Following the expo, more than 100 travel advisers will experience AmaSofia firsthand during a post-expo FAM cruise. Additional FAM sailings are planned throughout the year, allowing more advisers to explore the ship and its offerings
