Nepal is on the cusp of a new political era with Balendra Shah, known as Balen, poised to become the country's youngest prime minister. As leader of the Rastriya Swatantra Party, Balen's focus on tourism is anticipated to drive significant developments in the sector. Community Homestay Network, a pioneer in community tourism, has released its 2025 annual report, showcasing the positive impacts of tourism on local communities.
The report highlights that since its inception in 2018, Community Homestay Network has improved the lives of 1,945 individuals, marking a 170% increase. Notably, 865 women have benefited, reflecting a 381% rise. Founder Shiva Dhakal expressed optimism about the new leadership, stating, “Balen’s nurturing of culture and heritage, and focus on visitor experience as Mayor of Kathmandu, strongly align with our mission and values.”
Community Homestay Network's efforts in 2025 included expanding its community-led tourism model across 51 communities, involving 408 households, and benefiting approximately 2,000 people. The organisation received several accolades, including the Gender Equality Champion of the Year Award and the PATA Nepal Trailblazer Award.
The RSP's manifesto promises to enhance tourism infrastructure and connectivity, which Dhakal believes will further support responsible community tourism. He added, “The RSP’s manifesto is clear in its commitment to increasing visitor numbers and improving aviation connectivity and tourism infrastructure.”
With the government leaning towards promoting rural tourism, Community Homestay Network anticipates continued growth in job opportunities, cultural preservation, and entrepreneurship in rural areas. The full report is available for download on their website
